Panax Ginseng: What It Is and What the Research Says

Quick answer: Panax ginseng, also called Korean or Asian ginseng, is a root that's been used in traditional Chinese and Korean medicine for centuries. It's popular in focus drinks and supplements as an adaptogen. The research is mixed, and there's no authorised UK health claim for it, so treat it as a traditional ingredient rather than a proven focus aid.

Panax ginseng at a glance

Panax ginseng
Also called Korean ginseng, Asian ginseng, red ginseng (when steamed and dried)
Part used The root
Main active compounds Ginsenosides
Traditional use A tonic in Chinese and Korean medicine
UK health claim None authorised

Not all ginseng is the same

  • Panax ginseng: Korean or Asian ginseng. The one most studied and the one in PÜRCHARGE.
  • American ginseng: Panax quinquefolius, a close relative grown in North America.
  • Siberian ginseng: a different plant altogether (eleuthero), despite the name.

What the research says

Studies on ginseng and mental performance have been small and their results mixed. Some found changes on certain tasks, others found none. That's why there's no authorised claim in the UK, and why we describe ginseng by its traditional use only.

Who should be careful

  • Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Anyone taking blood thinners, diabetes medication or other regular medicines. Ask a pharmacist first.
  • Under-16s, especially in caffeinated drinks.

Where PÜRCHARGE fits

PÜRCHARGE includes Panax ginseng alongside 125mg of caffeine from green coffee, green tea extract (a natural source of L-theanine), enXtra®, rhodiola, electrolytes and nine vitamins, with 3.8g of sugar.
