Quick answer: the "crash" after an energy drink usually comes from three things: a big sugar hit, a big caffeine dose wearing off, and the tiredness the caffeine was covering up. A low sugar drink with a moderate dose of caffeine, sipped earlier in the day, avoids the worst of it.
What actually causes an energy crash
| Cause | What happens | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Sugar | A full-sugar can can carry 27g to 55g. A quick lift, then a dip. | Under 5g of sugar a can |
| Caffeine wearing off | Caffeine masks tiredness. When it fades, the tiredness is still there. | A moderate dose, not the biggest can |
| Too much at once | A large dose hits hard and drops hard. | Sip over 30 to 60 minutes |
| Poor sleep | Late caffeine hurts sleep, so tomorrow starts more tired. | Stop by early afternoon |
| Not enough water | Mild dehydration can leave you feeling flat. | Drink water through the day |

How to avoid the crash
- Cut the sugar. Choose a can under 5g. Our low sugar energy drinks guide compares the options.
- Go moderate on caffeine. Around 75 to 150mg is enough for most people. More just means a bigger drop.
- Sip, don't down it. Spread one can over 30 to 60 minutes.
- Time it. Caffeine takes hours to clear, so keep it to the morning and early afternoon.
- Eat and drink water. Caffeine on an empty stomach, with no water, feels sharper and fades harder.
Where PÜRCHARGE fits
We make it, and we won't claim any drink can stop a crash on its own. What we did was remove the usual causes: 3.8g of sugar a can, a moderate 125mg of caffeine from green coffee, and a still drink that's easy to sip slowly. It also has electrolytes and nine vitamins; vitamins B6 and B12 contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Not for under-16s, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Max two cans a day.

Why do I crash after an energy drink?
Usually a mix of a sugar dip and a large dose of caffeine wearing off, revealing the tiredness it was masking.
Do sugar-free energy drinks stop the crash?
They remove the sugar dip, but many still carry 160 to 200mg of caffeine, so the drop when it wears off can still be big.
How long until an energy drink wears off?
It varies by person, but caffeine takes several hours to clear. That's why a late-afternoon can can affect your sleep.
